Computer’s Technology to Assessed Language

Rate 3.5

I read the article “Assessing language using computer technology” and I would like to focus on the construction of computer assisted language tests (CALT’s) because this is a very useful tool at the time of evaluating students’ English skills and knowledge because of its suitability when getting scores and creating the tests. Some of the advantages of CALT are that teachers are able to control the time that the test will take, select multiple choices questions, and add audios and videos to the exams in order to make it interactive. There are some things to improve in the listening and writing skills on CALT at the time of measuring and also the high cost of implementing computer assisted language tests (CALT’s) in schools is a disadvantage; however there are more positive characteristics such as the ones mentioned above. To conclude, I would like to say that as a teacher I strongly believe that by applying the computer assisted language tests (CALT’s) we have a suitable way to score our students grade, to save time and to control the tests.

  1. Hello Tomas, I want to comment your post for this week because I have the same opinion. I agree when you said that computer technology is a very useful tool at the time of evaluating students’ English skills and/or knowledge. I think there are many advantages that students and teachers can get. For example, the use of computers can reduce the student’s possibilities of cheating, it allows the teachers to quickly evaluate the performance of the group, and students can also receive immediate test results and feedback. In some cases, they don’t have to take the quizzes at the school or at a designated time and place, and as you mentioned, teachers are able to control the time the test will take and add audios and videos to make quizzes interactive. However, I want to add some disadvantages. For instance, technology is not always reliable, information can be lost or the scoring system may fail. In some cases, teachers need some technical ability to create exams. In addition, not all students can use the computer very well. I believe teachers should investigate if students are familiar with the use of computers. It is important that students know about it because if they are not familiar, they will have complications doing a test. Despite the difficulties, I believe that computer technology is a good tool that teachers can use to evaluate students.

  2. Hi tomas, I have to say that your thoughts about the article were assigned for this week is really interesting and that I do agree with them. First of all, I do agree with you when you said that CALT's is a very useful tool not only for teachers when evaluating students' skills in a second language, but also for students to demonstrate their knowledge when they are evaluated, Second, I liked it when stated that despite the few disadvantages of evaluating students with CALT’s there are more positive characteristics. Therefore, we as future teacher should take the information provided in this article into account and put it into practice in our future classes.
